Vans was in Whistler, Canada for six days last week leaving me with the girls for our own little week of adventure.

Not to worry though as we didn’t waste any time getting our own little party started …

The girls understood that Daddy was away doing a bike race at our friends house in another country and that we had to continue on our usual routine as best we could without him. For me, that meant no more morning or weekend runs with the usual girls or using soccer practice as a time to do some of my Rouxbe cooking assignments.

The running part was an adjustment, but luckily I work for a company that provides showers and a locker room so I took my running outside a few days week during my lunch hour. The distance is only four miles and there is only about 9 feet of elevation (picture a completely flat bike trail and business park) so instead, I motivated myself to start running faster.

I was able to maintain an average pace of about 7:37/mile each day that I ran on my lunch break. The temps were in the 90s too so it was pretty hot when all was said and done but it was a nice stress reliever which I have needed since work is growing more and more insane lately.  I have also been using my standup desk more and taking the six flights of stairs at the office. I keep reading articles about how sitting is slowly killing us by raising our triglycerides and insulin levels and that a mere 30 minutes of activity doesn’t do squat to combat the damage. I commute at least two hours each day to work, I sit at a desk all day long most days and when I come home, I am sitting with the Peanut doing homework. I know it may seem like I am on the go all the time but the reality of it is, I do spend a lot of time in a chair. Think about yourself. How much time do you sit in a car, a chair, at a desk or on a couch? Really think about it. The number may surprise you.

I also recently have been diving more and more into my favorite type of cooking. The online cooking course I am taking through Rouxbe is great but it is your basic plant-based cooking style using things like coconut oils and cashews to create rich and fulfilling meals. My family history of severe heart disease and heart attacks really makes it hard for me to eat that way all the time. I truly believe in the work behind Dr. Esselstyn and when I finally received his wife and daughter’s cookbook, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, I have been on an plant-power cooking adventure!

Rouxbe does have a unit on oil-free cooking and I am eagerly waiting to get there so I can learn even more tips and tricks to cooking fantastic plant-based meals without oils or nuts.

It is really important for me to try and maintain a healthy heart (as it should be for everyone). I don’t need to share the statistics that prove Americans are getting more and more unhealthy and are more and more reliant on pharmaceuticals to try and “fix” their ailments. Drugs do not reverse anything. They are only a band-aid which is why I love Dr. Esselstyn’s message. He’s a doctor, a cardiologist and is first line of defense for any of his patients is to avoid medication and put them on a plant-based oil and nut free way of living. Not a diet, a way of life.

I know I know, so many of you are probably thinking “What?! You already do not eat gluten and meat, what on earth are you going to eat now if you leave out oil and nuts?!” It isn’t that difficult to cook oil free. Oil has no nutritional value to it what so ever. It is pure fat and can do massive damage to the endothelium, the innermost lining of the artery. Nuts will be a little harder as I do love almond butter. What Dr. Esselstyn and his crew (including his son Rip who is the founder and drive behind Engine 2) say, is that if you do not have a history of heart disease that 100% avoiding nuts and fats like avocado isn’t AS crucial.

I should preface this by saying I am TRYING to be better about living this way. In the years before Vans and the girls, my diet was very much low fat and nut free and I truly felt my healthiest (minus that gluten thing). However running and training for ultra races also presents various problems when you are maxing out high mileage on a weekly basis. In fact, my usual pre-race breakfast is a bar that contains a lot of nuts! What to do?

When asked about “moderation” Dr. Esselstyn’s response is generally, “if you eat unhealthy foods in moderation, you will have a moderate heart attack.” It makes sense. I am just trying to get the hang of it all. Eating this way and being active is doable. Rip Esselstyn is a former professional triathlete and firefighter who ate this way during his training days. It can be done. We shall see where this road takes me.

In other healthy news, the Peanut had another soccer game this weekend wherein she played goalie during the first half. One goal made it past her but her team soon rose to the challenge and returned the goal and many more.

It was a pretty grueling weekend. The temperature was in the 100s both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday started early with soccer photos for every single team in the league!

We had the soccer photos at 9 am (and it was scorching already) followed by a game at 11:00 am. Come noontime, everyone was fried and exhausted. Since I wasn’t able to run on Saturday due to all the soccer activities, I planned a run with Stonegate, Burning Girl and Pigeon for early Sunday morning. I haven’t seen Pigeon in quite some time so I was totally stoked when she said she could run with us!

Pigeon arrived at my house promptly at 6 am and we ran ourselves down to the trail head to meet Stonegate and Burning Girl. The sun had just come up and Pigeon and I were catching up on some lost time and laughs. I love how we can always pick up wherever we left off.

We headed out on New York Creek looking to do about 16 miles for the day. My house is about a half mile from the trail head so that added an additional mile for us. Right off the bat my legs felt a little tired but they soon came back to life for a short while. The run out is always nice. It is somewhat downhill and we’re usually super excited and chat the whole way. By the time we passed Spanish House over by Folsom Lake the conversations were starting to slow. I felt like I had a bowling ball in my tummy for a while but it luckily subsided after I ate some food and took a salt tab.

The trails are a bit technical on this side of the lake compared to the route I normally go but it was a nice change of pace and it had some real nice rolling hills that we’d run and occasionally walk. Poor Pigeon had run 26 miles on Friday, 15 on Saturday and was sticking with us on our 16 mile run today. Her legs were beat but she was able to hang with us.

We chatted and shared stories. The girls laughed endlessly at my fear of birds and Stonegate is longing for the day when a turkey crosses my path on the trails. I am sure she will have her day one of these days especially as we approach Thanksgiving.

Even though we started running at 6:30 am you could feel the heat coming. The air was thick on our route back and we were reduced to walking a bit more. We also encountered a million mountain bikers on the trail having a few close calls with some head on collisions.

Overall it felt good to be back out running some distance on the trails. I definitely feel the absence and I hope that I can rebuild the stamina I once had when it comes to running longer. I am also looking forward to the next two weekends coming up. Lots of adventures are ahead quite a few of them will be in Tahoe!

Meanwhile, I will be back in the kitchen cooking for Rouxbe as well as trying to incorporate some of my own plant-based meals ala Esselstyn style.

BACK ON THE TRAILS

As I mentioned in this post, the Peanut’s swim season is over. It seems, for the time being, I have my Saturday mornings back! Pigeon wasted no time and emailed me that we were meeting at 6 am and hitting the trails by 6:30 since the temperature was supposed to hit the low 100s.

She had emailed me that we were doing the Clementine and Stage Coach loops using our car as a make shift aid-station between loops. I remember this run. You can read about that adventure run here … I very clearly remember it being anywhere between 15 and 20 miles depending on how we finished the route. Ouch. 20 miles!? I haven’t been running more than 7 or 8 the last few weekends. My last run of 15 was about two weeks before Pigeon ran the Tahoe Rim Trail 100 mile race. Still, I was excited. I have missed my weekend trail runs and all the adventures that follow and yesterday’s run had its share of adventure.

Let’s start out with me waiting at my car at 6 am at our usual meet up place. I see Pigeon drive in and park a few spots behind me. I immediately jump out of my car and head to the back to gather all my things. I grab my bag and cooler and walk over to the back of Pigeon’s car. “What is that sticker? Did Pigeon put a sticker on her car?” I think as I am about to throw my bag into the back of this car. I stop and realize it IS NOT Pigeon’s car! The woman in the car just looks at me. I turn around and there is Pigeon, in her car, behind me “What are you doing?” she says. I just start laughing. Luckily, I kind of knew the woman whose car I almost climbed into but she looked a little confused. Just to clarify, they were the exact same car (make, color, everything) this girl had a few stickers on her car that Pigeon would never put on hers. I quickly climbed into Pigeon’s car and we took of laughing pretty much the first 20 minutes over my mistake.

I was excited for this run because three other girls were going to join us! Pigeon had thrown it out there that we were running early and luckily a few other ladies wanted to join us!

I have run with some or all of these ladies at various points over the last year. From left to right we have: Doc, Legs, Miss P, Pigeon and myself. These ladies are awesome runners. They are all super strong and a lot of fun. I was definitely the slow one in this group.

We started off with some climbing. Nothing like starting the lungs out on a high note up a big hill. Doc, Legs and Miss P took off running. Pigeon is still recovering from her 50 miles at Tahoe two weeks ago, so she was content to hang with me hiking and running our way up the hill.

We were just running along when all of a sudden my head gets stuck and I realize that once again, my pony tail was caught in the zipper on the back of my jenny vesta hydration vest.  This has happened numerous times to me on various runs. Trust me, I have tried two side braids, a french braid and even pigtails but my hair is that long that it sort of just swings and gets caught in the zipper. This time however, it was bad. I stopped and yelled to Pigeon to help me.

“What!? Again? You and your wardrobe malfunctions.” She comes to take a look at my pack and situation and goes, “Oh man, that’s stuck. That’s really stuck. I don’t think I can get that one out. I think you are going to have to pull a chunk out of your hair.” I start laughing and then start pulling. I could tell it was pretty wrapped in there. I pull and pull and all of a sudden I hear RIP! Ouch.

We eventually made it to the top of the hill and the others were waiting for us. We shared my little drama story, each of them agreed that it must have hurt.

Off we went down the trail. It was a nice run. We’d sort of separate at various points, each of us talking to a different person for a bit catching up on what is new in life or for me, finding out more about some people. It really makes the miles fly by when you have runs like this.

Eventually we got back to our car after a 6 mile or so loop. I hit the restroom and then when I got out, it seemed everyone was ready. I refilled one water bottle and dropped another thinking I wouldn’t need it since my pack was still quite full and had some ice. One thing that I forgot to do, was grab any additional fuel. I didn’t eat anything on the first loop as it wasn’t that long but I knew the second loop had some additional climbing and that we’d face some heat.This is no tadalafil 5mg tablets more than a new method of email spam only it’s permission based. Off we ran up the Stage Coach hill. When we got to the top, Legs called it a day and ran herself back down to her car. The four of us kept going towards the Auburn Damn Overlook with Miss P leading the way. She took a little different route to get to the overlook than Pigeon or I am used to but we were content to just follow her lead.

At the overlook we all tried to soak our bandanas  in water as it was starting to really heat up and fast. The water in the fountains however was luke warm at best. Not exactly refreshing.

Down the hill we went. Occasionally we’d stop and talk to some runners who were also out running. It seems everyone was trying to beat the heat with an earlier start.

Miss P was really feeling great on this run and was quite a bit ahead of us at all times. She’s in training for some nice races this year but both her and Doc ran the San Francisco marathon just the weekend before. Like I said, studs. 🙂

Pigeon was starting to slow just a bit. She was still in good spirits but the heat was rising fast. While the climbing slowed me down more than I would have liked, the rest of the run I felt pretty good. Occasionally I would pick up the pace and run a little harder or run up some tiny hill. Clearly I need to work on my climbing and hill repeats in the near future.

Soon we were coming to No Hands Bridge and the decision was made, we would head back to the car instead of heading up to K2 to try and make our run 20 miles instead of 16. I was fine with that.

When Pigeon and I reached the car and cooled down and said goodbye to the girls, the temperature gauge at 10:30 am read 97 degrees. That is hot at that hour!

I was home by 11 am and excited to spend the day with Vans, Squeaker and the girls. We had a little pool party planned and it was nice to just relax poolside (as much as you can with a million kids under the age of 6 in a pool) and enjoy the weekend.

LOOK AT THE WILD ANIMALS!

Today Pigeon and I got together for our last run before she takes on the Tahoe Rim Trail 100 mile race (aka TRT) in two weeks.

We agreed (me, begrudgingly) to meet at 6:45 somewhere in the middle and carpool ourselves to ADO (Auburn Damn Overlook). It was the day after the Fourth of July! Granted, we (meaning me), did most of our celebrating early in the day and on the evening of the 3rd of July, but I wanted a few more minutes of sleep. Luckily, Pigeon let me sleep a few extra minutes and pushed our run back (she originally wanted to be IN Auburn and running right at 6:45 am).

When we got to Auburn, we hopped out of the car and pretty much just took off. I wore my Ultimate Direction Jenny Vesta because the past few weekends I have been testing out how I want to use it when I am pacing Pigeon in two weeks. I think I have decided on a plan of attack. I’ll use the hydration bladder and one bottle (jug) to allow myself some extra storage room.

Almost immediately into our run we hear something off to the side and not 5 feet from us are a couple of beautiful deer having some breakfast. I just knew it was going to be one of those days on the trail. The kind of day where it is just gorgeous out and I find myself smiling from ear to ear no matter what.

The first couple of miles Pigeon and I talked, a lot. We talked about the recent happenings in our lives and also about TRT and what lies ahead for her.

The trail was dry and very dusty. When we approached the first “stream” crossing waterfall or watering hole, (however you want to describe it), Pigeon immediately got down and doused her bandana to wear around her neck. Even at 7 am, the temps were getting pretty warm. This SHOULD have been an indication or warning to us that the day would be a hot one, but we both sort of just shook it off and kept running.

We ran down towards No Hands Bridge, across and up towards K2. I knew where we were going without even having to say it. I didn’t mind. There is a porta potty at the end of No Hands so I decided that was the perfect time for a quick break.

The climb up K2 felt pretty effortless for both of us. We’d climb, talk and stop on occasion but for the most part we hiked pretty solidly all the way up.

I was pretty excited that I was feeling really well. I had some tummy troubles in the beginning but I always have tummy troubles. Once that subsides, I am generally a happy camper.

Pigeon always tests me out on the trails. She’ll ask me ‘which way’ at every turn or corner. She knows that I am generally looking down (trying not to fall) instead of watching where we are running. I think I can safely say, that I can park at ADO and run to No Hands, across and up K2 and possibly even the full loop without getting lost.

Which is kind of funny because if I park at the Cool fire station and you ask me to run to No Hands, I’d probably get us lost. 🙂

As we were coming to the point in our run where we could go back down towards No Hands or go straight and head to the Cool fire station we decided to hit the fire station. In my head I was thinking porta potty.

When we reached the parking lot though we both took some fuel and just stood there. We emptied our trash in the bin and pretty much just turned around and headed back out on the trail. We knew there was fresh water at the fire house but neither one of us thought to stop and fill up our packs. We thought we’d be fine with what we had (aaaah, hind sight IS 20/20).

When we reached No Hands Bridge again, Pigeon turned to me in the dead sun and said, “So I completely underestimated how hot it would be today. I have very little water left. This is going to be a long hike back.” I also felt like I didn’t have much water in my pack, but I also hardly use my hydration bladder, normally relying on my water bottles up front.

It was warming up pretty intensely on our way back and the trail was getting pretty crowded with hikers, runners and horseback riders.

Our pace was slowing considerably as we hiked more than we ran. At times, it felt like we were running from shaded section to shaded section. Finally, Pigeon tells me that her pack is completely empty. So I take off mine and I pull out my hydration bladder and realize that it was still pretty fully and I happily poured half of my water into her pack. Another runner was passing us as we were doing this and asked if we were good on water.

Off we went. This time, I knew that when we approached that waterfall, that I too was going to dunk my bandana in and rinse myself off a bit. I was sweating a lot. As we ran down the hill approaching the waterfall, we noticed that it was pretty crowded. It was full of hikers who clearly looked like they had taken on an adventure without realizing how hot it was outside. Many of them were sitting IN the waterfall.

Pigeon and I ran up, not really noticing too much and just squatted down in the water and took off our bandanas. We rinsed our faces, necks and arms. I looked up and I realized that everyone in the waterfall was glaring at us like we were some wild animals in a zoo who had approached them and were going about our natural course of wild life business.

I wanted to pull out my camera SO bad and take a photo but I didn’t. As we climbed out of the water and back onto the trail, quite a few more hikers were splattered around the trail. I turned to Pigeon and said, “Did you feel like you were an animal in the zoo back there with everyone sort of just staring at us as we cooled off?” She looked at me and busted up laughing, “Yes!” she said.

For the life of us, we couldn’t stop laughing about what had just transpired which for me, made the remaining sweltering miles, fly by a little faster.

When we finally reached the horse staging area, we decided to head straight for the canal. We were pretty overheated at this point and our nice little 15 mile run that should have taken us 3 hours or less, had taken us over 3.5 hours.

I have talked about the canal before but I am not sure I have ever posted a photo of it. To many non runners, this probably seems pretty gross …

For trail runners however, the canal is the perfect place to cool off during the hot summer months and in the cold winter months, it provides an amazing full body ice bath for recovery.

I am incredibly excited for TRT in two weeks. For starters, Be-Well-Run is flying all the way from Whistler Canada to help myself, Missouri and a few others crew for Pigeon. I love when she comes to visit. Second, just being in Tahoe for TRT is probably one of the most exciting times for a runner. I have crewed for Pigeon a few times (you can read about them by clicking here (2010) and here (2012) and here (2013) ).  In 2011 I skipped but I had an excuse (Squeaker was only about a month old), but Pigeon ran the TRT 50K in 2011 as well, read about that here.

I truly believe Pigeon is ready. Not only is her training spot on, but her mind is in the game. Not that her mind wasn’t in the game before, but I think having experienced this race at the 100 mile distance once before, has put her in a whole new realm of readiness.

The support she has behind her as well, no matter the outcome, is beyond amazing. There is no denying the Pigeon that I met in 2010 is not the Pigeon I run and train with now just four years later. Some of that change comes from life experiences and some of it comes from her amazing and supportive wife Missouri. Most of it though, I think comes from Pigeon’s desire, drive, confidence and diligence in making sure she is 100% ready to conquer her goal. She is a goal driven runner. Someone I’d admire and feel lucky enough to call my running partner and friend.

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE

…to old habits … don’t worry, Trailmomma.com is not going anywhere. 🙂

This week seemed a little less crazy and hectic than the week before. Sure we had a bunch of random activities and things to attend to almost every night of the week, but either they seemed less stressful or maybe we are used to the crazy train routine now. Who knows. The Summer has definitely been jam-packed with all sorts of things lately which generally makes us happy, but it also makes us realize how quickly the days are flying by.

The one thing that happened this week that was sort of a surprise to me was the fact that the place I have been going to every morning at 5 am for the last two years closed its doors. Breakout Fitness Folsom closed on Friday. Diane, the woman behind the gym, has decided to go back to coaching and training outside instead of inside. She wants to coach fewer days too. So while she is still coaching, the park where she is now going to hold classes, is a bit too far for me to manage and be able to get to work on time each day.

At first I will admit, this made me angry. I am normally okay at adapting to change but this was MY thing. This was what I did each morning that I absolutely loved and that has changed my fitness in ways I cannot describe. It helped me fall even more in love with TRX and showed how important core work can be (and how far I have to go to get a strong core). So to have this part of my day removed from my routine was a tough pill to swallow.

I want nothing but the best for Diane, I truly do. She has always been one of my biggest cheerleaders whether it was training for something, encouraging me to step outside the box and pursue some things I am passionate about or just improving my fitness she always was a voice of encouragement.

Needless to say, I did some research on my own and located a place closer to my house (I think) that has 5 am classes that are similar to what I was doing at Diane’s. You would be surprised to find that many places (gyms included) do not have early morning class. I guess many people just go to work later or work out after work but those are not options for me. I need 5 am. I also need more sleep but that second part is my own fault.

Wednesday I will be testing out a new gym with new people. Stepping outside my comfort zone a bit and trying something new. I hope it works out. I’ve been talking with Gold Country Girl too about potentially doing our own workouts in the mornings that would involve the same type of things that I did at Diane’s. Gold Country Girl is a personal trainer and has her own clients, but like most personal trainers, she doesn’t get to workout herself if she is coaching others. She, like a lot of women, has to squeeze in her workout before her hubby goes to work in the morning.

Speaking of Gold Country Girl, the Peanut had another swim meet this week in Loomis and once again, Gold Country Girl’s family let us crash in their tent while at the meet.

The Peanut has been struggling lately with diving. She wants to do it, but cannot get over the fear of the belly flop. Finally, towards the end of the week while at practice, she managed to figure it out. She was determined to try it at the meet this weekend but not from the starting blocks (they are really high).

When her first event (25 yard free style) came up, she looked nervous but she stood on side of the blocks while a lot of the other kids stood ON the blocks. When they said “take your mark” she bent over like a pro. When the buzzer went off, she dove! She actually did it! While probably not a 10 on the dive scale, she actually did it and then she started to swim. You can tell she wasn’t give it her all but she was doing it and she ended up in 2nd place for her heat!

Vans and I were super proud of her and you can tell, she was proud of herself. Next up was her 25 yard back stroke (which in real-time didn’t happen for another hour or so after the freestyle swim). Not sure what went on in her little head but her mood changed. While standing in line, another kid from the opposing team bumped or hit her (I am sure it was accidental) and this set her off. She started to cry and couldn’t regain her composure. When it was time for her backstroke, she got in pool. When the buzzer went off, she just swam. She didn’t kick off the wall, she barely even moved her arms. You would have thought she was just floating down the pool instead of racing. This killed Vans and myself. No matter what we feel like, we always try and give it our all. I know the Peanut is still young and she can care less about competition (even if it is with herself). As a parent though, it just breaks my heart (and lights a fire in me) because I want to see her succeed. I want her to see herself the way WE do. She is a pretty good swimmer, I would say better than average and even at such a young age, the mind games are playing with her.

She has a week off from any meets so I am hoping this down time, even though she has practice still, will recharge her batteries.

Speaking of recharge, I needed to recharge myself with a little trail run. Gold Country Girl and I had decided that we’d attempt a super early run on Sunday trying to make it home before our kids were awake. I also had to work at the store so I wanted to be home in time to have some down time before I went to work.

We agreed to meet at 6 am at the trail head down the street from my house and conveniently, hers as well. She invited her friend, Mom in Motion who is also going to run this 50K in November. Our plan simple, a two hour run however far that would take us. One hour out and then one hour back so we could all be home.

The lake was pretty as always but the area surrounding everything is dry and brown. We have had some fires recently in the area and things are getting a little dangerous because all the brush is just dried up. One little spark, and everything could go up in flames.

When we got to the point where we were going to turn around and run back, I decided we needed to take some photos. Pigeon is used to my “selfies” on the trail but both Gold Country Girl and Mom in Motion had not experienced running with me yet (and becoming blog victims).

After I snapped one of them we decided to try and get a group shot. I personally cannot stand the “arm stretched out let’s take a selfie shot” because no matter what I do, I look like I have a tree branch for an arm and a double chin.

That would be the weird arm in the photo trying not to have a double chin pose … this is when I decided that whoever is on the OUTSIDE of the group, needed to hold the camera …

We’ll get there. We are new at running with each other but come September, our miles on the trails together will increase tremendously as we start training for our 50K.

When we finished our run, we parted ways and I made the trek up the hill to my house. My tummy had started to revolt so I was happy to be done as I don’t think I could have made it another mile!

I guess this is a good start to a week of new things. A longer run with two new friends, trying out a new gym on Wednesday and the Peanut learning to dive. We all need to step outside our comfort zone a little I think once in a while. Try new things. Give it your all no matter what otherwise, you’ll never know what you might be missing.

WHISTLER CANADA 2014

I know I am behind in quite a few posts but this one will explain why. Since the Peanut is in kindergarten now and was officially on “spring break,” we did the opposite of what everyone else in the world does during spring break … traveled somewhere cold. 🙂

Actually, the time was finally right for the Trailmomma family to go and visit Be-Well-Run (BWR) and the BWR Family in Whistler, Canada!

This was our first international trip as a family and only Squeaker’s second time on an airplane. The Peanut is a terrific travel companion but I have to say, Squeaker is giving her a run for her money.

Our trip began at 4 am when we had to leave our house and head to the airport. We boarded our first plane with no issues and landed in Vancouver around lunch time. We arrived groggy, hungry and a little disheveled. BWR’s hubby (Bear) picked us up at the airport ready to take us back to their house in Whistler. He even had cookies in the car for the kids but the sugar was no match for their exhausted little bodies as they both fell asleep.

The BWR family lives in a condo just a short way from Whistler & Blackcomb mountains. They only have one car and two car seats and there were four adults and four kids so any mode of transportation made as a group, was by local bus.

Squeaker was in heaven. She could not wait to ride the bus every day. She was so excited she barely noticed the rain or snow that was happening almost every day we were there. She’d throw on her rain boots and jacket and be at the door ready to walk to the bus (which was a decent walk for a 2 year old’s legs I might add).

We stayed for 4 full days with 2 days of travel. This post could go on for days if I shared all that we did so instead, I’ll share using photos. Enjoy!
