HARD WORK PAYS OFF (THE PEANUT’s SECOND SWIM MEET)

As I mentioned in my last post, the Peanut is now on a swim team which makes finding time for long trail runs a little harder to manage. She practices almost 4 sometimes 5 days a week (whether with the team or at Steve Wallen Swim School) and has a meet every Saturday until August.

VIRB Picture

This past weekend was her second swim meet and her very first “away” meet (visiting the Sierra Sharks in Cameron Park). What is new for the Peanut is also new for Vans and myself. We are not used to this sort of thing as neither one of us was ever on a swim team. Soccer? Sure! I know all about traveling to tournaments and playing two games in one day (3 or 4 on a weekend) but I was never the PARENT in that situation. Dear Dad, I am sorry for all those crazy hot tournaments that you drove me to … luckily you didn’t have a 2 (almost 3) year old Squeaker to drag along with you. Poor kid!

IMG_5073

It was one HOT weekend but the Trailmomma family rallied like troopers. Thank goodness for GCRS Girl and her family. They are veterans of the swim meet and truly help us out in a way that I cannot even describe.

We arrived at the pool, found GCRS and family and set up our little camp. The kids immediately go into “what cool snacks did we pack” mode. Swim meets = eating lots of random snack and junk food.

The Peanut was listed in two events again, the 25 yard freestyle and the 25 yard back stroke. When it came time for her freestyle event we made our way down to the pool. Unsure of the set up, we noticed that they had regulation diving blocks instead of the mini-ones the 6 and Under kids are used to.

IMG_4271

Vans and I separate and each move to one end of the pool. This race, the Peanut was swimming towards Squeaker and myself. I saw her shake her head and refuse to get on the block … that’s ok, they are not required to jump from there.

When the buzzer blew, she jumped and started swimming. I was cheering so loud hoping that she could hear me under the water. All of a sudden, I notice that she’s one of the first few reaching the wall! She touched the wall and the timer turned to me and said “She got first place!” What?! My Peanut had swam FIRST in her heat!! She came out of the pool and I told her that she may have won AND that she beat her previous time by almost TEN SECONDS!!! Huge accomplishment. She was glowing.

She was given a bead from the coaches for achieving a PR. I think she was more happy with the bead than the new time!

Even Squeaker was proud of her!
Even Squeaker was proud of her!

Next up was her back stroke. Once again, all four of us made our way down to the scorching hot pool. Poor Squeaker was barely hanging in, she was so hot.

Starting in the water, the Peanut was put into lane 5. We were told by GCRS Girl that lanes 4 and 5 are reserved for the “fastest” of swimmers. When the buzzer went off, the Peanut pushed off the wall and started her back stroke. She stayed almost 100% straight and I saw her looking for the wall near the end. Instead of giving up and kicking (like she has done in the past) she reached and moved her arms another stroke touching the wall! She was first place AGAIN! She also got another PR by just a hair this time too! Who IS this kid? 🙂

A winner that's who!
A winner that’s who!

Apparently losing a tooth and getting a short summer hair cut made all the difference in her strokes this race.:)

Numero uno!
Numero uno!

When she got her bead, we also treated the kids to smoothies and icies (the post race ritual now I guess).

IMG_4284

Once we were home, I blasted into full force mode. Lunch for the girls, nap for Squeaker and a hot hot run for me. I just needed to get few miles in and it was blistering hot outside so I picked what I thought would be the shadiest route.

6 miles later I arrived home completely drenched but I felt better. It was probably the toughest 6 miles I have done in a while.

I saved some energy because I knew on Sunday I would be running with Pigeon and we were planning to do 10 to 12 miles.

So dry. So hot.
So dry. So hot.

Our goal was to start at 6:30 am and run some of the same route I had on the day prior. Pigeon was kind enough to come run in my hood knowing that I had to work at 10:30 am.

When she arrived I was having some shoe difficulty but soon we were off and noticing how warm it already was at just 6:45! Ouch.

We ran a few local trails over towards Brown’s Ravine. The first thing we see as we entered Brown’s was a gaggle of turkeys. TONS of them. All over the place and they had babies with them. Great, baby turkeys. The local turkeys are procreating, just what I needed to know!

Camouflage turkey heads
Camouflage turkey heads

As we ran I noticed neither one of us was really running like our usual selves. It just seemed like “work” to run. Folsom Lake looked gorgeous though and is definitely filling up with water (slowly).

P1050460

We saw quite a few FTR runners on the trail too. When my Garmin Buzzed 5 miles I stopped. I told Pigeon that we were at 5 and if we head back now, we’d have 1o. “I said 10 or 12,” Pigeon replied. “Ok, are we doing 12 then? We can run to the levee and that might give us a enough,” I say.

“What do you want to do?” Pigeon replies. “Man, if I had a quarter I’d flip it and let that make our decision.” I say half jokingly. “I have a Gu packet!” Pigeon says “Let’s flip that.”

When in doubt, flip a gel!
When in doubt, flip a gel!

Yes, that is totally a scientific way of making a decision when out on a trail. PowerGel side up we continued on (aka Powering On) if it was the back of the packet, we were turning towards home.

P1050463

Onward we went, all the way to the levee (which really wasn’t much further than where we had flipped the packet). 🙂

The run back was a struggle. Our energy was low, the temps were rising but we still had our sense of humor. We talked about our plans for Tahoe Rim and for some future runs. It as nice to reconnect with Pigeon as it has been a few weeks.

P1050461

What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger and having what should be a short easy run turn into something that feels like a marathon in a sauna while breathing through a straw is a good thing. It brings your brain and your body to a low point and it is how you react to that low point that matters. We could have given up and called Vans for a ride home but we didn’t. We hiked onward trying to lift ourselves up. Pigeon is not training for an easy race in July. She will hit low moments and who knows where those moments will strike. They could very well be on a flat easy section. It is how we handle those moments that matters.

As the Peanut has demonstrated recently, hard work in practice will produce good results. So get to work. 🙂

MUDSLIDE

Well, California asked for rain … and we got it. I know we need quite a bit more to make a dent in Folsom Lake, but today’s monsoon made for a great wet muddy run which always leads to some adventure.

Pigeon was working today so I reached out to TiggerT to see if she would be interested in doing 16 miles with me somewhere around El Dorado Hills. She agreed and told me that her friend Dirty David would be joining us. I’ve run with DD before, a few times actually. Along with TiggerT, he’s part of the Java Jogger group and is also known as TiggerT’s running husband.

After some random texting with TiggerT this morning on what we should wear, I decided on shorts thinking any additional clothing would be silly as it would only get wet and therefore make me cold on the run.

Dressed for the rain!
Dressed for the rain!

TiggerT showed up at my house and together we ran the half mile to meet Dirty David who was parked at the CSD.

TiggerT and I had decided in advance, what trails we were going to run to try and get our 16 miles. We started off down New York Creek which runs right near CSD and then headed up the climb to The Ridge Loop of Death.

The Ridge Hill
The Ridge Hill

I ran the whole hill. I was feeling great, my legs were feeling strong and I just was happy to be running! You can see TiggerT and Dirty David down the hill. The wind was pretty gusty on the hill. It was so windy that we had to stop and make a decision, do we run our normal counter-clockwise loop or do we go clockwise for some additional shelter from the crazy wind?

We normally go right here.
We normally go right here.

We opted for clockwise which was kind of fun since I have never run the loop in this direction before. However, when we made it to the streets of Serrano we were hit with major gusts of wind. I was almost sent chasing my hat and so we decided to turn around and run the direction we had just came back towards New York Creek.

Back down the Ridge, across the street and to New York Creek we ran just chatting and laughing away. Soon we came to a new obstacle …

Tree down!
Tree down!

New York Creek was completely blocked so we had to go around the tree.

Hiking around it.
Hiking around it.

When we came to end of New York Creek, TiggerT took us on Wild Oaks Trail. I knew about this trail but I had never been on it before because it is usually infested with turkeys and everyone knows how I feel about birds. I also wasn’t entirely sure which way to go. Now I know and I cannot wait to take Pigeon on these trails!

Soooo Pretty!!!!
Soooo Pretty!!!!

These trails are mostly downhill which is even more fun. We saw a huge deer dart off the trail too. Lots of rocks, which were slippery, I cannot wait to get back out there!

Cute little bridge!
Cute little bridge!

I kept stopping to take photos. Luckily TiggerT and Dirty David didn’t mind. TiggerT has done these trails many times. Vans actually mountain bikes through here at night sometimes.

They just keep going!
They just keep going!

Eventually these trails spit you out near Browns Marina where I have run many times before. We stopped to use the porta potty and tried to take shelter while each of us took a turn. It was definitely very windy out there.

However, we were not alone alone on the trails. We saw quite a few other runners and a mountain biker. Looks like the rain didn’t scare away too many people.

Folsom Lake shot - with a little more water at least!
Folsom Lake shot – with a little more water at least!

Up and down we ran, just chatting away some times and running in silence in others. It was somewhere along this trail that I noticed what felt like a tiny little pebble in my shoe. I even took off my shoe and tried to get it out. I thought I saw it fall but when I put my shoe back on, I still felt it. I assumed that it was stuck in my sock. I just kept going hoping that it would go away.

The trails were pretty slick and muddy out at Browns Ravine. Our original plan was to make it to the levee area and then run the levee to Folsom Point to add more mileage. However, when we stopped at the end of the trail I once again almost lost my hat!

TiggerT suggested that we just turn around and go back the way we came. That was fine with me as I have always wanted to do that to see what the mileage was and also, I really detest running the pavement hills back to my house.

Dirty David was leading the way. When we came to the down hill (that incidentally we all slipped on when climbing UP earlier) he made the decision that he was going run down it, not walk. I quickly stopped and grabbed my camera. I just knew this would turn out interesting.

He ALMOST made it!
He ALMOST made it!
You can see his skid mark!
You can see his skid mark!

You can see how Dirty David has since earned his nickname on my blog. The whole rest of the run we were trying to come up different names for him … Skidmark was one of my favorites but he vetoed that one.

What we all ran down (and up)
What we all ran down (and up)

Definitely a muddy day for sure but so much fun!!!! We were all pretty caked in mud but somehow my legs ended up being the cleanest of us all when all was said and done.

Once again, I stopped to take off my shoe and this time I even took off my sock! I couldn’t find that darn pebble so I just put everything back on and continued running back up Wild Oaks Trail.

We finally reached EDH Blvd. and collectively decided to take New York Creek again back towards the CSD to keep adding to our mileage.

When we came to the obstacle tree we’d passed earlier, TiggerT insisted that there was a “hole” in the tree for us to get through … Dirty David and I opted to go around but not before I grabbed my camera!

The hole was clearly TiggerT size
The hole was clearly TiggerT size

I think Dirty David and I made the wise decision here to go around otherwise I might still be stuck out there. I had quite a problem with being stuck today. Apparently the braid in my hair attached itself to a clip on my Jenny Vesta pack and I couldn’t lift my head … TiggerT had to come to my rescue but not without laughing hysterically at me first. Ahh, running with friends is so much fun!

Stream crossing!
Stream crossing!

I totally thought Dirty David would biff it into that stream. He was getting all fancy on us trying to figure out the best way to get around it … he made it across without any more falls though.

Soon we were back at Dirty David’s car where we thanked him for the run and the laughs. TiggerT and I continued running the half mile road to my house. The rain was really starting to come down hard at this point. I mentioned to TiggerT that the drops were getting larger by the minute. We.were.drenched!

When all was said and done, my Garmin read 15 miles. I am okay with that as I was soaked to the core and I really wanted to see what was going on with my foot. As it turns out, I now have the start of a huge blister on the ball of my foot. This is odd to me as I have never in my life had feet or blister problems before and now I seem ridden with them. Maybe it is time for new socks? Maybe it was just the really wet conditions (although I have run in worse). Who knows but I am glad it happened on a 15 mile training run and not next week’s Western States Training Run which is 21 miles (and I am SO stoked about it).

While I was out getting soaked, Vans and the girls were snuggled nice and warm in the house getting spoiled by watching Clifford and eating breakfast at the same time.

FAMILY AFFAIR

With the whole Trailmomma house home today for Martin Luther King, I decided to make plans for Vans and myself. Something that I have always wanted to do …  BREAKOUT FITNESS! I know I know, I go to Breakout Fitness every day at 5 am what is the big deal? Well, I took advantage of Vans being home by I signing us both up for the 9:00 am class and asked Diane if she would mind if I brought the Peanut and Squeaker along for the ride. She said we could give it a try and Vans agreed so I figured why not!?

Vans knows that I love Breakout Fitness. He has seen the change I have made over the course of a year but of course money is always at the forefront of his mind. He’s often made the comment that I could get a local gym membership for way less than I pay to attend Breakout Fitness. While I will agree that this is true, I’ve often told him that Breakout Fitness is “different” and I have tried to explain how but of course he didn’t get it. What better way to explain something than to show you right!?

Today Vans and I brought the girls to Breakout Fitness in Folsom. I set the girls up with the iPad on some nice yoga blankets in the back of the gym and left them to their CareBears movie while Vans began his warmup.

Foam Rolling
Foam Rolling

After foam rolling Vans had to participate in our newest challenge … jump roping!

Getting some air!
Getting some air!

It looks like he is the only one in the gym but really we had about 6 of us total. He was however, the only guy. He was awesome. It didn’t phase him at all.

We’ve been working for weeks now doing various Spartacus style workouts and this week we’ve made it to 50 seconds “on” with 20 seconds of “rest” and the list of moves was long! Vans had the opportunity to do TRX low rows, TRX hip lifts, bosu ball spider man push ups, kettle bell swings, sand bell slams, tricep push ups and mountain climbers (not a complete list of what we did mind you). He was sweating and doing his best. It was fun having him in class. During my normal 5 am group, there is one married couple (there used to be two) and it is so neat to see them working out together. Maybe some day Vans and I could go but I highly doubt he’ll ever wake up and do the 5 am workout since the 9 am was hard enough for him. 🙂

When all was said and done, he agreed that if he came on a regular basis, he’d be much stronger. He saw the difference between going to Breakout Fitness and just having a gym membership. I am curious how he will feel tomorrow or the next day. 🙂

The girls were fantastic. No one heard a peep from them the entire time and many commented on how well behaved they were. In all honesty, they’ll do anything if promised a treat and a chance to squeeze in a movie.

After we treated the girls to some pastries from Coffee Republic, we made our way over to Browns Ravine. If you’ve seen anything on the news lately, Folsom Lake is practically empty and it isn’t pretty. It is however, causing massive amounts of people to visit the dried up lake in hopes of seeing some of the ruins of the old Mormon Island town.

She is standing IN the lake
She is standing IN the lake

The girls walked/hiked a long way from the road to the lake. At first they didn’t quite understand what it was we were doing but after some explanation and the fact that we found seashells and other artifacts while we hiked, the reality set in.

While I admit that seeing all this stuff was really cool and oddly surreal, it was actually quite sad to admit that we were standing IN Folsom Lake. Just 12 years ago I was water skiing on this lake for the first time and now it looks like a dried up piece of land.

IMG_4027

It was also insanely hot considering that it is late January. The girls were troopers (for the most part) walking all over the place looking at random things left in the mud.

Artifacts?
Artifacts?

Overall, I think it was a good family outing and was definitely something different to do as a family. Hopefully not something we will see very often though (bring on the rain please!!).

P1040354

After our family hike it was time for lunch, naps and yard work. I was also able to squeeze in four miles which included a couple of hill repeats on the Ridge Hill. My legs felt pretty good despite the workout from this morning.

I love long weekends like this. I will try not to think about the fact that my  next long weekend isn’t until May. I hope you all were able to get outside and do something active as a family. Make memories!

Happy Trails!

KEEPING IT LOCAL

Things are almost back to normal around here. Pigeon is back from her trip to Missouri and we were able to resume our training this weekend. It was one of her working weekends so our run was set to happen when she got off around noon.

Let’s back up a little to Monday. With the new year upon us and the first full work week, I was determined to maintain my training. Monday started out with Breakout Fitness and a killer Spartacus workout that left me so sore come Tuesday that getting in and out of the car was a struggle.

Tuesday I did a core workout at Breakout Fitness and during my lunch hour managed a tempo run. I have an allotted time at work and only so far that I can run. In reality, I shouldn’t be running at work at all based on my schedule, but I am determined to fit it in each week. I would rather run at lunch then try and motivate myself when I get home from work at night, in the dark.

Wednesday was another Spartacus at Breakout Fitness. They are tough but they are definitely effective. Thursday I woke up and drove to the track. I did a little speed workout (nothing to rave about) and then drove home. I realized when I got home that I had not timed out my run just right and I had 15 minutes to spare. So I did hill repeats right outside my house. With the garage open and the lights on, it provided just enough for me to see. I really enjoyed the hill repeats …. I can’t help it, I like hills.

Friday I decided it was best to skip Breakout Fitness’s Spartacus workout and save my legs for Saturday. I think this may be my plan of attack from now on. It will add a little extra sleep to my week and I can wake up early enough to do  20 to 30 minutes of foam rolling and stretching, something I do not do much of at all and really should.

All of that leads me to Saturday’s run. They called for rain. We got a little drizzle.

P1040275

Originally we planned on running the Salmon Falls trails but I quickly changed my mind that morning when I saw the skies all grey and threatening. Not that I don’t like running in the rain, I just felt like staying closer to home would be a little better for us.

I decided that Pigeon needed to see the run that I did a few weeks ago. We set out down my hill towards the New York Creek trail. We stopped in our tracks in awe of what was in front of us!

P1040268

The year’s first stream crossing!

We have had no rain all season and this was quite a sight for sore eyes. Granted we could jump over it, and we did, it was still quite amusing to see the water and pretend it was something more than it was.

The Ridge Loop of Death was its old self: steep hills, loose gravel and a few other runners out for a jog. Pigeon hasn’t been out on this trail in a while so it was fun showing her some of the new homes being built.

P1040270

Welcome back to the ridge Pigeon!

P1040271

It was nice because we talked about her time in Missouri and what has been going on in my life. Being separated for a while allowed for us to have more to talk about and the miles sort of just ticked away.

We descended down the Ridge back to the road making our way to the New York Creek Trail when something made a huge noise and jumped out of the bushes and scared the living day lights out of me. I took a photo of the vicious thing that scared me.

P1040272

Scary sprinklers!

Pigeon jumped a mile high because I yelped from the sound of the sprinkler. She then proceeded to yell at me for freaking her out. I pretty much just stopped and laughed on the spot.

Once we resumed our composure we continued on running towards Browns Ravine only to stop and laugh again when Pigeon saw the “attack” turkeys.

P1040273Yea, they are fake.

Soon we made it to Brown’s Marina which was super crowded because people from all over are coming to see the ruins of Mormon Island that lies beneath Folsom Lake.

P1040277

We meandered through Browns Ravine chatting the whole way. We had a minor incident with someone hiking through the trails but overall that portion of the trail was uneventful.

When we made it back to the road we ran to Beatty Drive and cut up through the trail back near my neighborhood.

P1040279

Pigeon loves Beatty

However, there was a special little gift just waiting for her at the top of the hill. I told her I had planted it there for her so she wouldn’t have to run home.

P1040282

Overall it was a great run for me. I felt really well. No tummy issues on this run. Not sure whether or not this was due to it being in the afternoon and my tummy had time to adjust to the day or what, but I will take it.

And to leave you with a thought about conquering fear and starting of the new year with determination. The Peanut joined a swimming clinic this past week. She was very nervous as she would be in a pool with kids she did not know and a coach that wouldn’t be able to reach out and grab her at moments notice. She did awesome. She swam the length of that pool about 13 times and loved it.

BACK ON THE TRAILS

First let me say thank you to all of you that read my last post. I appreciate those that commented, shared it on Facebook or even emailed me directly in support. I also thank those that didn’t necessarily agree with my post and told me as such. As a reminder, that post was the letter that I WISH I could have sent to the PTA President and was not the actual letter I emailed (which was much nicer, sort of). My biggest issue with her initial response was how dismissive and rude she was to me and my concerns. She clearly could have just said something along the lines of “thank you for your email. I understand your concern and will take that into advisement next year when planning.” But she didn’t do that. Instead she tried to draw me into championing a new game to rival the ring toss and was downright rude about it. I am not going to beat a dead horse about this. I sent my letter last week in response and I cc’d the school principal so she was made aware of what her PTA president was doing and how she handled parent’s concerns. I have not heard anything from either one of them. I will be more on top of things next year when our Harvest Festival planning is in the works.

This past weekend marked a small running milestone for me. On Friday I was able to run the Ridge Loop of Death (7 miles) for the first time and boy was it disastrous. Not only was it sweltering (what the heck, it IS October right?) but I had forgotten that I had gone to Breakout Fitness that morning and had done a series of leg drills (squats, burpees, lunges). Not the wisest decision on my part however, I was thrilled to be getting an extra day out running in the first place since I don’t often get extra days to run. This also was the first time since surgery that I did the Ridge Loop of Death!

On Sunday, Pigeon and I had agreed to run when she got off from work which would be late afternoon. In a way, I enjoyed this late start because I was able to enjoy a nice leisurely morning with my family but it was also harder to motivate and figure out the meal situation. However, I could not complain because Pigeon had been on her feet working a 9 hour day prior to meeting me so really, hush up Trailmomma right?

I decided that I wanted to test out my new socks. I recently purchased the Injinji lightweight no-show socks (from Amazon).

photo-1 (2)

I don’t typically (knock on wood) have blister issues when running but I have noticed that my running form has suffered post-surgery because I have been running as if my ankle is GOING to hurt and therefore have been running on the outside of my foot. The Injinji socks really let you focus on putting more weight evenly on the front/ball of the foot including the big toe. The sock is really light weight, almost nonexistent compared to my Drymax socks that I usually wear when running trails. I am not entirely sure how these socks will hold up when running through streams and river crossings but overall on a dry hot day, they were great. I really liked how they felt and I didn’t have any issues when running. I purchased two pairs and will continue to wear them running to see how their fare through some winter running. Maybe I’ll do a search and see if they have a trail version that is perhaps a bit thicker. I have an old pair that I won years ago when they first came onto the market but I prefer the no-show look and the older pair was more of a crew sock.  Okay enough about socks.

Pigeon showed up and instead of taking her on the Ridge Loop of Death we decided to try a new loop that Vans suggested that takes us on a bit of road and trails but ultimately dumps us into Browns Ravine and we found ourselves running right by a very dried up Folsom Lake.

It was a fun run and I brought my phone because well, running with Pigeon always involves the historical pretend we’re in a JCPenny Catalog Photo Shoot (probably just an excuse to stop running periodically).

The weather was pretty warm and sunny with little shade cover on most of the trail. I was having a blast. Running with Pigeon is fun regardless but just being back out there running up the hills (or power walking) and getting a little dusty felt awesome. Once we found ourselves on the levee by the lake we took the pavement back to my house by cutting through a fairly festive neighborhood.

photo 4-6 (2)

Scary spider!

In total, we did about 7.25 miles which is roughly what the Ridge Loop of Death is distance wise. No matter what you are running some massive hills on either route but I would say the hills on the Browns Loop were a bit worse and/or steeper. There seemed to be more of them and maybe that is just my recollection because I was dying from the heat and from being out of shape. Baby steps. Our fitness is coming.

Gear: For this run, besides my new Injinji socks, I also sported Athleta’s Stability Shorts  in black and their Printed Tinker Tank both of which are on sale (hint hint). The shorts I love and wear often (I have 3 different colors) and the tank,  which I usually reserve for Breakout Fitness type workouts did well for me on the run although I had to pair it with a sports bra for added support. When I can, I will try and do gear updates like this as often as I can so that perhaps someday Athleta will give me a shout out and welcome me into their wonderful world as a Featured Athlete. (hint hint). For hydration I brought my Camelback insulated handheld. I love this water bottle. I never leaks, holds enough cold water for distances up to 10 miles or so and has a handy little pocket that fits gels or in my case, dates in it.

I’ve been thinking a lot about 2014 and what runs I’ll be doing next year. Perhaps I’ll do a post on what my plans are and what I’d like to accomplish next year. Right now, I have no real races scheduled that I plan to race. I do have an entry into the California International Marathon that I am toying with right now.

In other news,  sadly Van’s is on a business trip this week so there will be no Breakout Fitness classes this week or trails runs until Saturday. I am okay with that. I look forward to spending time with these two little monkeys.
