EDH TRAILS – COMMUNITY HELP NEEDED

The internet is a funny thing. One day I was surfing the net, I can’t even recall what I was searching for when I came across this website www.edhtrails.org . I thought, “What is this?” One click leads to another click leads to another leads to me attending a board meeting at our local CSD (Community Services District) to speak up in support of Mike from EDHTrails.

You read that right, SPEAK UP as in talk in front of more than one or two people! One of the most dreaded and detested fears (in addition to birds and turkeys) in my life. Granted, I didn’t talk for almost an hour like Mike did, but I did speak up and talk to the board casting our “vote” as to why we think what Mike and EDHTrails is doing, is a wonderful thing for our community.

I’ve posted about my running adventures in and around El Dorado Hills. From the “Ridge Loop of Death” (my own made up name mind you) to New York Creek to Brown’s Ravine. EDH has some awesome little trails for running and mountain biking.

When we moved here three years ago, I had no idea these trails existed. It was TiggerT that first showed me The Ridge (yes, blame her) and Vans told me about New York Creek when I first started running again after Squeaker was born.

The street on which we live in EDH even has some trails on it but they don’t necessarily lead anywhere or they are not groomed well enough to use easily.

Mike and EDHTrails want to change all that. For starters, he wants to create a Village Connector Trail.

Proposal
Proposal

The Village Connector Trail will be one mile in length on an already existing piece of land that sits underneath some telephone wires. This trail would connect El Dorado Hills to Folsom. It would also contain a Cross Country Skills Loop for kids to ease into mountain biking and have fun. You can see more photos on Mike’s webpage at www.edhtrails.org.

Wild Oaks Trail

What happened at the board meeting on February 4th was exactly what Mike wanted to have happen; he wanted a seat at the big table. He presented his maps, photos and plan to some of the board members in an effort to get on their agenda for their big meeting on February 13th. He succeeded.

Those members present listened to Mike and others talk about the need for such an amazing outlet for our already very active community. What many people do not realize is that El Dorado Hills is slowly becoming a hub for ultra-fitness and outdoor enthusiasts.

For example, true-story  – A few months ago, while the Peanut, Vans and I were at our annual optometry check-up we discovered that our optometrist is a huge ultra-runner and cyclist running 50 mile races and riding in death rides. We thought that was not only interesting but absolutely awesome that she and her husband were so active. The whole rest of our eye appointment was spent comparing races and trails. Then, we discover that the father of my daughter’s classmate is one of the partners opening El Dorado Hill’s newest running store Gold Country Run and Sport where I now work on Sundays. The Folsom Lake Trail Runners, one of the largest organized running groups have many members (myself included) that live in El Dorado Hills or just around the corner in Folsom. If you go to Mraz Brewing on a Thursday evening, you will be greeted by quite few mountain bikers having just finished their night ride (Vans include) enjoying a beer at a local family run brewery. Even our local high school has a mountain bike team.

The community is active. The community wants to support local business. The community needs to pull together.

The next order of business will be on February 13th. Mike and EDHTrails needs community support. The CSD Board will be there with all of its members present, ready to listen to Mike’s proposal (a condensed version mind you) and will put to vote whether or not a CSD team can be assembled to begin the initial process of vetting out costs and necessities to make this plan a reality.

If you are local, please share this and come. If you are active, please share this and come. Please share this post as much as possible. If you want kids to be active instead of at home playing video games and watching TV, please share this and come. If you can’t make it, find a friend who can. If you have kids, bring them! The Peanut was with me on the 4th watching her mommy stand up for something she believes in that will ultimately benefit her health as well.

I will post the details below and be sure to like Mike’s Facebook page as well so you will constantly be up to date on the progress of his plan and where all the meetings may be held.

Even if you do not live in the immediate area, please don’t be afraid to share this. All it takes is one community to be an example of an active healthy lifestyle for others to follow.  Who knows, maybe our small little community could be the catalyst for change. You never know!

Happy Trails!

FAMILY AFFAIR

With the whole Trailmomma house home today for Martin Luther King, I decided to make plans for Vans and myself. Something that I have always wanted to do …  BREAKOUT FITNESS! I know I know, I go to Breakout Fitness every day at 5 am what is the big deal? Well, I took advantage of Vans being home by I signing us both up for the 9:00 am class and asked Diane if she would mind if I brought the Peanut and Squeaker along for the ride. She said we could give it a try and Vans agreed so I figured why not!?

Vans knows that I love Breakout Fitness. He has seen the change I have made over the course of a year but of course money is always at the forefront of his mind. He’s often made the comment that I could get a local gym membership for way less than I pay to attend Breakout Fitness. While I will agree that this is true, I’ve often told him that Breakout Fitness is “different” and I have tried to explain how but of course he didn’t get it. What better way to explain something than to show you right!?

Today Vans and I brought the girls to Breakout Fitness in Folsom. I set the girls up with the iPad on some nice yoga blankets in the back of the gym and left them to their CareBears movie while Vans began his warmup.

Foam Rolling

After foam rolling Vans had to participate in our newest challenge … jump roping!

Getting some air!
Getting some air!

It looks like he is the only one in the gym but really we had about 6 of us total. He was however, the only guy. He was awesome. It didn’t phase him at all.

We’ve been working for weeks now doing various Spartacus style workouts and this week we’ve made it to 50 seconds “on” with 20 seconds of “rest” and the list of moves was long! Vans had the opportunity to do TRX low rows, TRX hip lifts, bosu ball spider man push ups, kettle bell swings, sand bell slams, tricep push ups and mountain climbers (not a complete list of what we did mind you). He was sweating and doing his best. It was fun having him in class. During my normal 5 am group, there is one married couple (there used to be two) and it is so neat to see them working out together. Maybe some day Vans and I could go but I highly doubt he’ll ever wake up and do the 5 am workout since the 9 am was hard enough for him. 🙂

When all was said and done, he agreed that if he came on a regular basis, he’d be much stronger. He saw the difference between going to Breakout Fitness and just having a gym membership. I am curious how he will feel tomorrow or the next day. 🙂

The girls were fantastic. No one heard a peep from them the entire time and many commented on how well behaved they were. In all honesty, they’ll do anything if promised a treat and a chance to squeeze in a movie.

After we treated the girls to some pastries from Coffee Republic, we made our way over to Browns Ravine. If you’ve seen anything on the news lately, Folsom Lake is practically empty and it isn’t pretty. It is however, causing massive amounts of people to visit the dried up lake in hopes of seeing some of the ruins of the old Mormon Island town.

She is standing IN the lake

The girls walked/hiked a long way from the road to the lake. At first they didn’t quite understand what it was we were doing but after some explanation and the fact that we found seashells and other artifacts while we hiked, the reality set in.

While I admit that seeing all this stuff was really cool and oddly surreal, it was actually quite sad to admit that we were standing IN Folsom Lake. Just 12 years ago I was water skiing on this lake for the first time and now it looks like a dried up piece of land.

IMG_4027

It was also insanely hot considering that it is late January. The girls were troopers (for the most part) walking all over the place looking at random things left in the mud.

Artifacts?

Overall, I think it was a good family outing and was definitely something different to do as a family. Hopefully not something we will see very often though (bring on the rain please!!).

After our family hike it was time for lunch, naps and yard work. I was also able to squeeze in four miles which included a couple of hill repeats on the Ridge Hill. My legs felt pretty good despite the workout from this morning.

I love long weekends like this. I will try not to think about the fact that my  next long weekend isn’t until May. I hope you all were able to get outside and do something active as a family. Make memories!

Happy Trails!

RESOLUTION RUN 2014

Today I had my first official race of 2014. I wasn’t going to do this race this year but plans changed and I found myself sans running partner on a perfectly beautiful day to run.

I ran the 10k last year with TiggerT and recall vividly telling myself  “thank goodness you didn’t sign up for the 10 mile option.” The course is pretty brutal if you are not used to running these trails. The course is ALSO brutal because it follows NEW YEARS EVE!!! Granted the race start time is 1:00 PM so there was no waking at some ungodly hour but we did have some company at the Trailmomma house and I made some of my two favorite dishes for these friends who do not typically eat the same way that we do. These dishes however, taste wonderful with a great glass of red wine, which we also had in the house and of course you can’t have New Years without champagne!

Needless to say, soon after the ball dropped on tv I was out like a light. Squeaker woke up at her usual time despite my best efforts to keep her entertained in our bed while I tried to go back to sleep.

Vans and I decided that all of us would make the trip to Auburn despite Squeaker’s nap time being smack dab in the middle of it all. It kind of worked out because as soon as we hit the road, she fell asleep. Ahem, I have NO idea where she gets THAT from. 🙂

Vans dropped me off at the start line so that I could check in and get my race stuff. We had 15 minutes until the race started. Once I got my stuff I found where he had parked and luckily it was near a spare porta-potty! I quickly got in line and by the time I was out I heard the announcer say there was 5 minutes until race time. The four of us hiked up the hill to the starting area and I got into the crowd.

IMG_2213

The start was very informal. Basically it was “ready, set, go!” The 5k, 10K and 10 milers all start together and head towards the road and then down the hill. I immediately remembered some of the course. Oh boy. Once on Damn Hill the 5k/10k runners went left and the 10 milers went down down down Damn Hill. Damn Hill is the same hill that you run UP in the American River 50 Miler – you can read about that race here.

Soon I saw the arrows not only pointing down the hill, I also saw them pointing up which could only mean that we were to run down Damn Hill and then back up again. I know I need this training eventually but today was not the day I was anticipating it.

My legs felt fantastic. My ankle felt fantastic. My stomach? Um, yea that did not feel so wonderful. Definitely a by-product of New Years Eve indulgences but also something I have been struggling a lot with lately.

My abdomen was growing larger by the minute. I was bloated and just feeling off. I tried my best to not think about it and to continue drinking my water. Luckily I did not have that sloshy stomach feeling. For this race I didn’t bring any fuel except water in my one handheld and 2 SCaps. Did I mention it was WARM? I mean like tank top and shorts warm but I was wearing shorts, a t-shirt and my compression socks. The socks were borderline too much but I think they really helped keep my ankle situation in check.

Going down the hill I don’t think I passed very many people. Eventually we turned and entered some trails that were all up hill leading us back to the same paved Damn Hill road. I had some spring in my step. The ups were definitely my favorite part of the day. I am really beginning to enjoy them. Pigeon scolds me sometimes to conserve my energy by walking up the hills but I have the power and I even have some speed when it comes to climbing up the hills. I can’t power hike for crap so why not run?

IMG_2236

The girls were waiting for me ….

I passed a lot of people on these climbs. When back on the paved road, I continued to run as much as I possibly could and found myself running more than I have in the past. I did end up hiking some of it, especially past some horses who were out for a walk.

The rest of the course was a lot of ups and downs and stuff. I vaguely remembered these trails but suddenly the trail I was on connected with all the other runners and it happened to be the same route that Pigeon and I take on our runs (at least lately). I immediately perked up. I used to not like running the same trails but this time, it was a relief because I knew exactly what was coming and where and whether or not I could run it.

I ran. I ran all the ups and would take a breather at the top and then continue on. I was definitely struggling with my tummy and trying not to think about it but I was also passing quite a few people (guys). It felt good.

Then we came to the section of the trail that I always complain to Pigeon about. It is the trail that leads us back to the Overlook. It just is so windy and when you think you’ve reached the end, there is another single track climb right there in front of you. It can be a little defeating.

However, I heard something. I heard a cow bell. Now this is not totally unheard of in the Sacramento region, we are called a Farm Town for a reason, but I knew this bell and I knew the person ringing it! My girls!

IMG_2240

There she is!

My girls were right where the trail enters the parking lot. I still had to run up the hill and back to the overlook but just seeing them really made me happy.

IMG_2242

You can see in the photo above how bloated I am!

I finished the race and was spent. I was definitely out of breath, so much so that I couldn’t even talk to my long time friend and old running/pacing friend Big D! She was a sight for sore eyes for sure. I had sprinted up the hill to the finish line because I was afraid the woman I had passed earlier in the race was close behind!

After the race, we wandered over to the skate park which is also at the overlook. The girls wanted to show me their tricks. Apparently this is where they were hanging out while I was running on the trail.

IMG_2227 IMG_2233 IMG_3931

I love my “crew” to pieces. Squeaker really had a blast in the skate park but was slowly growing tired. Her ability on the bike has greatly improved. Peanut opted for the scooter and was actually going over some ramps or whatever at the park. I think Vans was super duper proud and excited. 🙂 I even got to watch him skate which I haven’t seen for a very long time.

For me, the first of the year started off great. A nice trail run where I was able to push myself a little bit and still overcome some issues (that I need to get dialed in) and spending the day with my family. What more could I ask for?

I will leave you with those two recipes that I made on New Years Eve, just in case you were curious. 🙂

For an appetizer I made Oh She Glow’s Easy Flaked Almond “Tuna” Salad. Vans loves this stuff (so do I) and my guests really liked it too. It is super easy to make as well.

For our main dish (which was small since we’d all been snacking on apps for over an hour) I made With Style and Grace’s Stuff Acorn Squash with Quinoa and Pistachios. I added some vegan sausage that I had to the guests’ dishes though (mixed in with then quinoa and pistachios).

Well there you have it … our New Year’s Day in a nutshell. What did YOU do on New Years? What WILL you do in 2014? I have a list of a few things I’d like to try and incorporate more. I don’t really like the term “resolution” because it kind of gives off the impression that you try something for that particular year. Still, I do think we should all take a minute and think about 2013 and the things we could have or should have handled or done better.

I wish you all a wonderful 2014! And let the count down to the Winter Olympics begin!

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

Back in October of 2011 I posted this on my old Trailmomma blog but I think I need to do a repost. I have been struggling all week with topics to write about lately and then one morning it dawned (no pun intended) on me as I was driving home from my workout at Breakout Fitness. It was before daylight savings and a couple was walking their dog at about 6:00 am. I know they are walking every morning because I see them but what I notice is that they wear nothing that is reflective nor do they even bring a flashlight! Yes my neighborhood is fairly quiet (especially at that time of day) however we do live on a street that is generally a passage way to those living in a nearby gated community. There is no shoulder and they can easily be struck by an oncoming car. I truly want to stop them and say please wear something reflective, not just a white shirt and bring a flash light but I am afraid they will probably freak out if I even slow my car down in the morning near them.

While government statistics don’t break down the fatality figures between runners/pedestrians and cars, Runners World did do a survey of their readers. They then posted this article back in 2010. I am sure with the large amount of smartphones and texting going on, that these numbers have probably risen more so in the last few years. In fact, a woman with whom I work out with every morning has had to battle her worst nightmare, her husband being hit by car that was going 50 mph while riding his bike. Luckily he survived but they have had to go through a series of struggles not to mention legal battles because the driver had no insurance.

I am not going to lie when I say that my heart skips a beat every time Vans goes out on a road ride. I am grateful he goes during the daytime but honestly, that doesn’t really mean much in today’s world of texting and driving.

When you add darkness to the mix, the game changes drastically and runners (as well as cyclists) need to be on the defensive. I have been running fairly consistently one night a week after work. Daylight savings has ensured that I will be running in total darkness at 6:30 pm and so I run in a variety of reflective gear and I carry two headlamps (one on my waist so that I can see and one in my hand so I can flash it at oncoming cars). I may look foolish when I leave the house but I feel safe. I also never run with headphones and I run against oncoming car traffic (never with).

Some of the items I wear are my Nathan Reflective Arm Sleeves as well as a reflective vest (I go back and forth between two brands). If I am wearing capris, Athleta’s Relay Capriss have some reflective piping on the legs for low-light conditions however I wouldn’t rely totally on that feature. I do wear one of their reflective hats as well.

A lot of people run to relieve stress and unwind, especially after work and I would say that I am one of those (especially on my week day runs) however, one thing I make sure that I always do, is stay focused and pay attention. Night running is not the time to be thinking about your day at work, what you will have for dinner or what you will make the kids for lunch tomorrow. You need to be present, in the moment and with all cylinders running. Typically I will run from my house to a local track (that has lights for the football players) and when I get to the track, I will let my mind wander but the minute I leave the track and turn on my headlamps, my brain is focused on getting me home in one piece.

There are a lot of reasons due to which an individual tends to face 100mg viagra http://icks.org/n/data/ijks/2010-0.pdf this problem. Under a national popular vote, we would see each other cialis line order again. Teens under 18 must also complete sample viagra Texas driving course. Consult a Doctor Why you should see your doctor? It is important to consult your doctor, because erectile dysfunction can be many, like hypertension, cialis professional price diabetes, cholesterol, heart disease etc.
It is often on my runs home that I see other runners, cyclists or dog walkers not wearing enough reflective gear as well as drivers looking at their phones. Please be careful and think defensively! Take the initiative and light yourself up like a Christmas tree in December and that doesn’t mean just throw on a white sweatshirt.

Watch this short youtube video :

from 3M Scotchlite’s No White At Night campaign. It will blow your mind. White is not reflective. While a great color to wear in the hot summer months, it is not ideal for night runs.

With the darkness starting to consume our evenings, please be prepared. Visit your local running store or shop online. If you have an active spouse that trains at night or in the morning, considering buying them some reflective gear and encouraging them to wear it. My kids love when I dig out my headlamps. Please share this post on Facebook or Twitter, encouraging others to run safe.

After all, it is not always about you.

GOLD RUSH DAYS

First off, YEA! We are back in business with posting and photos which is a good thing because I have a back log of things to post about.

A few weeks ago, we took the girls to Old Sacramento for the Gold Rush Days. We’d never been and it was the last day (Labor Day) of the whole weekend.

086This is a brothel. No, the girls didn’t ask what that was thank goodness.

088

But they were a little confused by the reenactment. 🙂

So the entire Old Sacramento area was transformed into what the Gold Rush Days looked like in the 1850s. They brought in dirt to pour over the concrete streets and they had horses and wagons all over the place. It was really really neat and it was FREE. At one point (in the above photos) they closed off one section of the street for a “reenactment” of what a typical scene would be at a brothel back in the 1850s. All the “characters” were dressed for the part. Basically the “women” of the town were enraged that a brothel even existed and so they would protest out front to “shut the doors and remove the sinners!” The men on the other hand, enjoyed the saloons that were below the brothels and then of course, would venture upstairs to visit the “ladies. ” Eventually, fights and the like would break out and consequently, the brothels would catch fire and burn to the ground. So in this reenactment the brothel caught fire, the old firetrucks (pulled by horses) arrived to “save” the brothel women and put the fire out. It was done with some humor too.

092

This old guy was in the brothel and came out with a stick of dynamite in his pants. It was kind of funny watching him. After they finished with the show, they opened up the street and let the kids visit with the actors and the horses.

108

Squeaker was shocked at how BIG the horses were as she got near them.

We wandered around and visited some of the stores that were open for business normally in Old Sac like the candy shop. They let you try anything you want so the girls were in heaven.

At the far end of town, tents were set up for display showing how people made money in the 1850s. I stopped with the girls at one tent as I was fascinated watching the woman spin, what was essentially a “doily.”  It must have taken forever to make huge ones.

111

Just look at all those “sticks” used to make the doily!

They also sold sarsaparilla in these really cool bottles. Instead of sarsaparilla we bought lemonade since none of us drink soda. Surprisingly, both girls really liked the lemonade, especially Squeaker!

135Trust me, that’s lemonade! But the photo is hilarious.

We found a really shady spot under a tree to sit and rest. All of a sudden a group of men on horseback came over and started practicing these crazy “fighting” drills on their horses. The girls were pretty excited watching them ride right by us.

123

It is essential that the male patients must cialis generic tadalafil make the consumption of such drug devices as per your usage and you get them conveniently delivered and installed at the venue on time. One important thing is don’t use this medicine so that relaxes the muscles. viagra pfizer 100mg You should always talk to the doctor about it to avoid embarrassment that could be caused due to injury, stress, anxiety, buy discount viagra diabetes, problems in relationship, cardiovascular disease, drug use and excess alcohol intake. Sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient present in the pill are known for treating sexual disorders and help to satisfy your highly beautiful woman with enhanced sexual buy cheap levitra pleasure.

 Regulators, mount up!

125

Totally into it.

144

Charging the “enemy” with their swords.

Afterwards, they wandered into town and we were there to watch them. They waved at the girls who were getting pretty tired and hungry at this point.

156

Our final stop on the way back to the car was the old school house. It was not actually used in the 1850s but was built to show what a school house in Sacramento looked like. The real school houses were located at the edge of town apparently. Regardless, the girls really enjoyed going inside and sitting at the desks.

165

Using the chalk board notebooks.

Overall, this was a really cool experience and Vans and I both agreed that it was a lot of fun. Sacramento has a lot to do and sadly we don’t often make the trip or the time to do what is offered in our own backyard so to speak. I definitely want to return to the Gold Rush Days next year if we can.

Next up, my surgery and how things are going. It was a week last Friday that I had my ankle surgery. It seems like ages ago to me though.

Happy Weekend! Make time to get outside and be active. Your body and mind will thank you.
