I AM HURT!

We are two weeks away from the Way Too Cool 50K. This weekend’s run was slotted to be 26 miles. After last weekend’s run, I was ready.

I hadn’t seen or run with Pigeon in about 3 weeks so I was ready to reconnect with her and enjoy our day out on the trails. Our email exchanges this week had been brief but we had decided on a route that involved loops again using the car as our own personal aid-station.

We had run a similar loop a few weeks ago but this week we decided to start at the top of Stagecoach trail as there was a race going on in the area and we wanted to avoid some of the runners. After parking, figuring out what we were going to wear and assembling our gear we took off down the Stagecoach hill.

About a quarter mile into the run I hear (very loudly) GOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE! As pretty much everyone knows, I have an intense dislike of all birds so I slowed, squealed and tried to find out where they were. I looked up and on the cliffs was the largest turkey I have ever seen with his wings stretched out. I said, “Did you see that!?”

Just as I said that, I hear Pigeon start to gobble herself (mocking the turkeys mind you) and when I turned around to find her she was gone! I heard a yell, a laugh and when I turned again Pigeon was entangled in my feet! With my crazy ninja like reflexes I was able to avoid going down with her but Pigeon was down and then she was back up! She popped up so fast I didn’t realize what was going on. Then we stopped.

I am hurt!
I am hurt!

Pigeon’s whole left side was one giant slice of trail rash. From her elbow to her knees, she was a mess.

Trail Rash

Her hydration pack on her back had saved her backside from also being scrapped up but it was the way she was holding her arm that had me concerned. We were laughing and running still before she started yelling, “I am hurt! I am hurt!” I felt like I was with my kids, “What hurts? The cuts? Your elbow? Use your words!” ๐Ÿ™‚ I was pretty concerned about her arm as she was holding it awkwardly but she seemed to be worrying more about the cuts on her quad and knee (which were swelling before our eyes).

We stopped finally to assess the damage and clean up as best we could … and also for me to take some photos of the situation. ๐Ÿ™‚

Not laughing at her, just at the situation.

Down the hill we continued on. I am not sure if the trail shoe had been on the other foot, if I would have continued on the way she did. She is one tough runner. When we made it to the bottom of Stagecoach we used the bathrooms and continued on.

I kept checking in with her but she said she was fine so we just kept running. When we made it back to our car/aid-station, we connected with another trail group that we sometimes run with. They were doing the same thing, using their cars as an aid-station and running almost the same loops we were … except they were running fast.

She's tough.
She’s tough.

The temps were predicted to be pretty warm and we both were kind of excited by this. Despite our need for rain, we’ve been very spoiled with our amazingly warm temps in the middle of February. It made for some amazing views too.

We ran over towards the Overlook and down the hill towards No Hands. I was noticing that Pigeon was slowing down a little and I was worried she might be changing her gait a little too much. She mentioned that climbing and descending were tough on her quad which was swelling to the size of a small grapefruit.

When we reached No Hands Bridge we stopped as there was an aid-station set up for the Fourmidabl Races. I recognized the two people manning the aid-station and mentioned to them that Pigeon had fallen. They were quick to whip out their first-aid kit and I tossed Pigeon some Neosporin. It was probably a little late but I was worried that she had not cleaned out her cuts yet.

It was about here that Pigeon decided that she should call it a day instead of trying to squeeze out another 10 miles to make our 26 for the day. I know it killed her inside to call it quits. If we didn’t have Way Too Cool just two weeks away, I might have encouraged her to push it but at this rate, she needs for these wounds to heal and she needs to not alter her gait compensating for the injury.

So we crossed the highway ready to run back up Stagecoach again when we ran into the other trail group again. They saw Pigeon’s distress and asked her how she was doing. She told them she was calling it quits and they seemed to agree that was a good call. In awesome trail runner fashion, one of the girls brought her a baggie of ice to ice down her swelling quad.

We walked over to some rocks and sat down to just give her a moment to ice the wound and take her off her feet for a little bit.

It was here that I know different scenarios and thoughts were flying through Pigeon’s head. She is not a quitter, not by any stretch. She was battling here with the decision she was making but I know she knows she made the right call.

Sad but smart.

Soon it was time to gather ourselves and start the climb up Stagecoach one more time. We hiked, we shuffled. Finally at some point, Pigeon turned to me and said “You can run. In fact, you should run!” I hate leaving my friend but in all honesty, hiking up hill hurts my lower back whereas running doesn’t (odd, I know). So I told her I’d meet her at the top and I took off.

I ran a lot and I walked some. The terrain on this road is just plain annoying. It is just rough, rocky and really hard to get your footing if you have feet issues (like me). It was also super hot and sunny (I love that though).

I made it to the top, tapped her car and ran back down to find Pigeon and hike back up with her. When all was said and down, I had 20 miles on my Garmin and was feeling pretty good. Whenever we’d stop I would stiffen up but that is normal.

I do feel that I could have made the additional 10 miles today if things had gone our way and that is all I need to know. My concerns about running Way Too Cool subsided a little bit. I have no doubt that the run will be hard but I know that I have definitely gained some endurance. 13 miles flew by easily today and I haven’t felt like that in a long time.

Next week is our taper week which is always a mind game for most runners. That’s the time we start noticing aches and pains or try to avoid anyone who might be sick (like my kids).

I just am hoping for some nice weather for Way Too Cool. My plan of attack is to have fun. Running with Pigeon I think that can happen. She is using it as a training run for Tahoe Rim Trail 100 and I don’t really care to blow myself up if I still have to run the American River 50 Miler 4 weeks later.

To me, the best part about running trails is the friends you run with, the friends you meet along the way and the adventures you have together. Today was a little bit of all of that.

Happy Trails!

KEEPING IT LOCAL

Things are almost back to normal around here. Pigeon is back from her trip to Missouri and we were able to resume our training this weekend. It was one of her working weekends so our run was set to happen when she got off around noon.

Let’s back up a little to Monday. With the new year upon us and the first full work week, I was determined to maintain my training. Monday started out with Breakout Fitness and a killer Spartacus workoutร‚ย that left me so sore come Tuesday that getting in and out of the car was a struggle.

Tuesday I did a core workout at Breakout Fitness and during my lunch hour managed a tempo run. I have an allotted time at work and only so far that I can run. In reality, I shouldn’t be running at work at all based on my schedule, but I am determined to fit it in each week. I would rather run at lunch then try and motivate myself when I get home from work at night, in the dark.

Wednesday was another Spartacus at Breakout Fitness. They are tough but they are definitely effective. Thursday I woke up and drove to the track. I did a little speed workout (nothing to rave about) and then drove home. I realized when I got home that I had not timed out my run just right and I had 15 minutes to spare. So I did hill repeats right outside my house. With the garage open and the lights on, it provided just enough for me to see. I really enjoyed the hill repeats …. I can’t help it, I like hills.

Friday I decided it was best to skip Breakout Fitness’s Spartacus workout and save my legs for Saturday. I think this may be my plan of attack from now on. It will add a little extra sleep to my week and I can wake up early enough to do ร‚ย 20 to 30 minutes of foam rolling and stretching, something I do not do much of at all and really should.

All of that leads me to Saturday’s run. They called for rain. We got a little drizzle.

Originally we planned on running the Salmon Falls trails but I quickly changed my mind that morning when I saw the skies all grey and threatening. Not that I don’t like running in the rain, I just felt like staying closer to home would be a little better for us.

I decided that Pigeon needed to see the run that I did a few weeks ago. We set out down my hill towards the New York Creek trail. We stopped in our tracks in awe of what was in front of us!

P1040268

The year’s first stream crossing!

We have had no rain all season and this was quite a sight for sore eyes. Granted we could jump over it, and we did, it was still quite amusing to see the water and pretend it was something more than it was.

The Ridge Loop of Death was its old self: steep hills, loose gravel and a few other runners out for a jog. Pigeon hasn’t been out on this trail in a while so it was fun showing her some of the new homes being built.

It was nice because we talked about her time in Missouri and what has been going on in my life. Being separated for a while allowed for us to have more to talk about and the miles sort of just ticked away.

We descended down the Ridge back to the road making our way to the New York Creek Trail when something made a huge noise and jumped out of the bushes and scared the living day lights out of me. I took a photo of the vicious thing that scared me.

P1040272

Scary sprinklers!

Pigeon jumped a mile high because I yelped from the sound of the sprinkler. She then proceeded to yell at me for freaking her out. I pretty much just stopped and laughed on the spot.

Once we resumed our composure we continued on running towards Browns Ravine only to stop and laugh again when Pigeon saw the “attack” turkeys.

P1040273Yea, they are fake.

Soon we made it to Brown’s Marina which was super crowded because people from all over are coming to see the ruins of Mormon Island that lies beneath Folsom Lake.

P1040277

We meandered through Browns Ravine chatting the whole way. We had a minor incident with someone hiking through the trails but overall that portion of the trail was uneventful.

When we made it back to the road we ran to Beatty Drive and cut up through the trail back near my neighborhood.

P1040279

Pigeon loves Beatty

However, there was a special little gift just waiting for her at the top of the hill. I told her I had planted it there for her so she wouldn’t have to run home.

P1040282

Overall it was a great run for me. I felt really well. No tummy issues on this run. Not sure whether or not this was due to it being in the afternoon and my tummy had time to adjust to the day or what, but I will take it.

And to leave you with a thought about conquering fear and starting of the new year with determination. The Peanut joined a swimming clinic this past week. She was very nervous as she would be in a pool with kids she did not know and a coach that wouldn’t be able to reach out and grab her at moments notice. She did awesome. She swam the length of that pool about 13 times and loved it.

IT CHEEPED

This weekend Pigeon and I continued with our training by heading out to Auburn for a long run. We have not been to the Overlook since well before Thanksgiving. I admitted to her early on in the run that my motivation was lacking lately and that I had hoped that this run would bring back that excitement. Running up in Auburn always seems to ignite something within that gets me excited about the running and racing road ahead.

IMG_3813

We met at the Auburn Dam Overlook or ADO at 7:30. Waking up was really hard for me. I was just tired and it seemed so cold in our house that I figured it had to be colder outside. I decided to wear my Athleta Relay Capris for this run. I have never worn capris or tights on a long run before, not even for CIM. I wanted to give it a try to test how hot I might be on the run.

There were not many car at the overlook when I arrived but I saw Pigeon’s car. We pretty much both jumped out, changed out of warmer clothes and started off down the trail. I didn’t bring any gloves which normally is fine as I tend to take them off anyway but today I was carrying a water bottle which mean my hand would be holding a cold bottle. Ouch. Pigeon had gloves. I went digging into my car and I found my weight lifting gloves that I keep in the car for my Breakout Fitness workouts. Basically they are gloves minus the finger tips. I don’t typically care what I look like when I run, I just throw on some stuff (usually I match) and go. Well these gloves not only matched they totally worked at keeping the palm of my hand warm while holding the bottle. Pigeon laughed at me but it was okay. I actually kept the gloves on for the entire run too.

My legs were stiff. My back has been giving me problems all week and I think the tight muscles in my back are streaming down the back of my legs and hitting my hamstrings. Not totally uncommon. It was definitely hard to feel free and flexible on this run.

At one point we saw three deer just walking across our trail. Shortly after we saw Diane Cressey and stopped for a quick hello. Then we rounded a corner and continued on when all of sudden I heard some rustling in the bush next to me which caused me to jump which caused whatever was in the bush to jump too and take flight and it started chirping quite loudly. I flew even higher which caused Pigeon to do this crazy ballerina move in the air. She really got some air between herself and the ground, I was quite impressed. She was like “What!? What is it?!” totally panicked at whatever had scared me. I yelled, “It cheeped!? It cheeped!” She stops and looks at me, “It cheeped? Don’t birds CHIRP? Not cheep?” We laughed and I still stand by the fact that little birds can “cheep” it is the action verb of “chirp” … um yea, sticking with that. ๐Ÿ™‚

IMG_3814

Back to the run, we ran over No Hands Bridge and up the hill towards K2. I have not run up K2 since I ran with Pigeon and Be-Well-Run two summers ago. It felt a lot easier climbing this time than it did before which made me feel a little better.

We eventually found ourselves at the Cool Fire Station where I made a brief pitstop. Then it was back towards ADO. When we hit the down hill section leading to No Hands Bridge Pigeon took off. She was just coasting the downs and I wanted to as well but had this nagging feeling in the back of my head (fear?) that I didn’t want to roll my ankle again. With my hamstrings and back slowly cramping up, I was just a little hesitant. I long for the day when I can fly down that trail though. It’s just a great trail with easy footing (minus a few rocks and roots).

Once we hit No Hands Bridge we stopped so I could stretch out my back and my quads which like I said, were really feeling super tight. I think at that point, Pigeon realized her quads were not feeling as springy as they might have felt at the start.

The trail back to ADO from No Hands was long and slow. We did walk/hike quite a bit both of us just feeling the day’s work on the trail. I just have to be patient with myself and realize that one run doesn’t determine my fitness and one run two weeks after a road marathon (that I didn’t train for) shouldn’t feel like a total walk in the park.

The run this weekend did accomplish something though, it motivated me and got me excited about running again. I am looking forward to my workouts this week which I have to do solo but I promise myself I will do despite it being holiday week and not having to work a few days this week.

As with most holidays, I am sure everyone is feeling some stress. Just remember to be patient with yourself, life and others. Not every day will be an easy training day.
