OUR SCHOOLS

So as many of you know, I am a full-time working mom. I have two little girls ages 5 and 2 and for most of my mom-years I have been dealing with daycare and not the public school system. When my 5 year old entered kindergarten for the first time this fall, I was excited. I was thrilled to have her in an educational environment where her brain would be challenged more so than a daycare ever could. I remember kindergarten. I loved it. I remember Mrs. Horvat, my teacher, she rocked. I soaked up everything that I was taught.

So it is natural for me to have the same expectations for my daughter even though I know we are two separate people. Starting kindergarten for my daughter was a very stressful time. She is a timid and anxiety ridden child, unsure about anything “new” in her life. Routine is her best friend, as it is for most kids.

When she entered school, met her teacher and began her first year, she did well. She did way better than Vans and I had expected. She was learning, making friends and becoming more independent. I had assumed our challenge would be her making friends, speaking up when she wanted or needed something and just overall acclimating to being with 25 other new kids she has never met. Never in my wildest dreams would I envision the struggles I’d face with food.

As I have said before, my daughter is a picky eater who loves sugar. I struggle at home to get her to make the right choices when it comes to consuming healthier food. Apparently I was naive to think that my daughter’s school would be on my side by encouraging these healthy choices.

You may remember this battle that I had with the PTA President back in October. Well trouble strikes again, this time in form of asking parents to submit General Mill’s Box Tops.

A few weeks ago, my daughter came home on a Friday with her homework folder and in the folder was a flyer from the school reminding parents to collect and submit Box Tops. I read the flyer, was immediately annoyed and tweeted this photo:

IMG_3964

I understand the point of box tops (from the school’s side): each Box Top collected is equal to 10 cents, you bring in 10 box tops and you’ll have a dollar, a dollar from each kid … you get the point. Money! It always comes back to money. While I admit you can collect Box Tops on items like Ziploc baggies (although we try and use reusable in our house), most of the Box Tops come from General Mills sugar laden chemical filled cereals.

While it may appear that the school is “winning” by earning money, the real winner is General Mills. Not only do they get parents to buy their products thinking that they are going to be supporting their child’s school, the company essentially develops life long customers because the sugar in their product is addicting.

Create groups or teams where together they decide on the best treatment they can adopt to remedy this problem. free samples of levitra We would advise you to follow the dosage pattern that is to have the 100mg pill of discount cialis 20mg an hour before you make love. Penis pumping involves increasing the holding capacity of corpus cavernosa to the cialis generic australia penis. Folate tadalafil 20mg cipla is essential for blood circulation, including the reproductive system.
I could go on and on about the Box Tops. My problem however was rewarding kids who clearly ate sugar to “win” with more sugar! Why does the prize have to be a donut party? Why couldn’t they provide the winning classes with jump ropes? You can find a jump rope for a dollar at most dollar-stores … why not promote exercise instead of more sugar?

In my obvious displeasure I tweeted the above photo to a lot of the people I look up to nutritionally on Twitter. One of whom is Registered Dietician Andy Bellatti. Andy not only retweeted my photo, but he also commented on it. He also contacted me privately asking if he could use my photo (a slightly altered one) as well as my name and issue with the school, in his next article. He has been wanting to write an article about Box Tops for some time for the website www.civileats.com.

I said sure, no problem. I didn’t want the school mentioned by name but he could use my name, my photo and my town (we have many elementary schools here). I was prepared for Civil Eats, I was not prepared for The Huffington Post. Last week sometime I was surfing twitter (I surf more than I tweet) and I came across a post by Andy linking to his article in the Huffington Post – you can see that article here. You can see it on Civil Eats here.

Wow. I know I only have a small mention in a sentence or two but since that initial tweet my following on Twitter has significantly increased. The way in which he wrote his article was also great. He did his research. He looked at the numbers. He got other well known experts to comment.

I just wanted to raise awareness in my daughter’s school. Whether anything will change because of this article, is unsure but it will open some eyes. It has definitely started a fire within me to try and create some change in my daughter’s school. I am battling her eating habits at home, I don’t need the school fighting against my efforts when they should be on my side. They should be on the side of the children and their health, not General Mills.

Happy Trails!

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

December 14th was the one year anniversary of the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newtown Connecticut. I saw the stories online talking about the families who have lost loved ones on that horrible day asking that the media respect their wishes and stay clear of the town, school and their lives. All they wanted was for people to do some random acts of kindness.

This struck a chord with me as I used to do such things on a moment’s notice. I didn’t wait for the holidays but lately it seems I find myself doing them less and less.

I decided that needed to change so while at Starbucks the other day I bought a gift card and gave it right back to the woman at the register. I told her that  I wanted to buy whoever came up next in line a cup of coffee and to tell them to please pay it forward.

On the actual anniversary of Sandy Hook, the Peanut and I did our own special Random Act of Kindness. I won’t lie, I was inspired by a friend on Facebook who had this happen to her last year. I purchased a card and a small gift card. Inside the  card I wrote that I was honoring Allison N. Wyatt age 6 who attended Sandy Hook. From what I had read about Allison, she loved art (just like my Peanut) so I wanted to do something in her memory. If could have done 26 random acts of kindness that day, I would have but I hope that the couple we handed the card to would in turn do something in memory of another child lost.

I’ve seen and witnessed a lot of Scrooges on the roads and in the stores lately and it really started to bother me. If we can make one person smile by doing something out of the pure kindness of our hearts, then I think that is the greatest gift one can give.

In this occupied current world, despondency is the most well-known issue. cialis generic cipla find out that now December 19, 2015: Sonia and Rahul Gandhi to appear in court sildenafil tab and pleaded not guilty. Also, men with high blood pressure, high cholesterol order tadalafil online and diabetes have also been linked with infertility. Why then, apart from the reason stated above, did she fail to tell you she has a boyfriend? levitra 40 mg This brings me to MY story.
It doesn’t have to involve money either. I have a friend who offers to walk their neighbor’s dog. You can take out someone’s trash or even return their trash cans closer to their house so they don’t have to walk. Use your imaginations and use your heart. The next time your temper rises consider the person you are about to scream at and think about what they might have going on in their life at that moment. Show some compassion.

TIS THE SEASON

Tis the season to be … what? Busy? Overwhelmed? Tired? Stressed? That seems to be the theme these days for a lot of people including myself. I think my stress and overwhelmed feelings stem from being out-of-town the week of Thanksgiving. While I wouldn’t have traded our trip to Tahoe for anything, we tend to get a lot of our decorating done that week leaving the days after Thanksgiving for other holiday related things.

In my last post I gave you a CIM Race Recap. I actually felt quite well after running CIM. I was sore for a day but only when I would go from a seated position at work to a standing one. I returned to Breakout Fitness on Tuesday as well as the rest of the week. I even went for a short run with TiggerT one night during the week.

Last week was also my birthday. I was able to figure out a way to make it an almost week-long celebration like old times. 🙂 The actual day of my birthday, Vans and I attended a small Christmas party that we used to go to a lot before having kids. My wonderful in laws watched the girls for a few hours. Long enough for us to attend the party and have a quick dinner afterwards. The following day Vans and I took the day off and just did some long over due Christmas shopping. We also lunched at the Plum (Vegan) Cafe in downtown Sacramento and saw a movie. Saturday I had arranged for a baby sitter to come over so that Vans and I could have a date night that was VERY Trailmomma themed!

Night Run!!

We joined the Folsom Lake Trail Runners and the Java Joggers group on their 5th annual Christmas Light holiday run (6 miles). We met at Breakout Fitness and then ran to Dovewood Court to see the lights. I have never been here before and it was pretty awesome.

IMG_1957 IMG_1970

Despite having to run 6 miles, in the dark, on trails (uphill) with a bunch of “runners,” I think Vans had a good time. When we ran back to Breakout Fitness, Diane had it set up with snacks and beverages for us all. She also busted out her TRX to see who would be daring to try some stuff.

IMG_1985Double TRX Push Up

It was a fun date night and one that I look forward to doing again next year with Vans.

Other exciting things going on in the Trailmomma household? Peanut got her ears pierced! She’s wanted them for a while but was afraid that it would hurt. It did. I was honest with her the entire time. I also stayed true to my word and did not take her to Claire’s so some teenie-bopper could pierce her ears unevenly.

Let’s discuss about different versions of the why not try this out mastercard tadalafil Kamagra tablets. Chronic cialis for cheap price penile weakness is a classical symptom of erectile dysfunction (ED), commonly called impotence. Staying physically order viagra from india fit is also known for boosting up energy and helping individuals to feel confident. Drink Water Water sildenafil tablets without prescription is water, there is no more of that “doll hair look.” Even though transplants are successful and are virtually impossible for anyone to detect, they are also very expensive, time consuming, and painful.

I cannot believe how big she is getting. She is really enjoying her earrings and is so happy that she had them pierced (despite the kicking and screaming that occurred during the piercing).

Squeaker also had her first ever haircut! Just picture kicking and screaming coming from this one too.

IMG_3759

So what lies ahead for Trailmomma and this blog? I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately about that. In the past, on my old blog, I would just post a lot about my family and my running. Eventually the running died down quite a bit and that sort of left me with nothing much to write about other than my family. Now I know my extended family far and wide love to hear and read about the girls (and I love to write about them) I also know that the general public probably doesn’t care all that much and would rather read about my running or something else.

I am trying to find a happy medium and I am also just trying to do what comes to mind and what makes me happy.

However, my running future is going to start picking up very soon. I got into the Way Too Cool 50K lottery and will be running WTC in March. I also signed up for the American River 50 Miler (April). I did both races in 2010 training with the awesome Fleet Feet Training Group. This time however, I am doing it with Pigeon and ultimately on my own. I am a little nervous about that. Having a group waiting for me really made sure I got that mid-week run in but when I look back, I really only ran two days a week, maybe 3 for those races. Honestly, that is all the time I have now when you factor in all that we have going on in our lives with the girls and work. I am crossing my fingers that quality training on those two or three days will help me cross the finish lines. I am not looking to break records, sure I’d love PRs (personal records) on each of these runs but whatever happens, I want to finish with a smile.

Pigeon and I have had a small break in our training routine as of late which will pick up soon. In my head I am really setting myself up for January 1 as the official start. I know this may be foolish but I just have too much going on in my head to really sit down and think about running. I’ve been running but not quality. I’ve also been testing out some new shoes (more on that in another post) and I am trying to do this without injuring myself. I never have good luck switching shoes. Ever. I am a little scared right now that the twinge in my knee is from the new shoes. It could however be from just running CIM and not giving my joints some proper rest (which I have done the last few days).

So in the meantime, this blog will have no agenda. It will just be whatever flows from my head at the time. My goal is to try and bring my camera on my runs to document some of the trails I see just like I did back in 2010. I really enjoy going back and reading about those runs and how I was feeling and how I dealt with certain situations. It is also a great memory for the girls to read some day. After these races, who knows. Maybe I will be brave enough to start that Personal Training Certification Course I looked into or maybe the nutrition courses I’ve seen.

I do know that part of my goals for 2014 (besides these two races) is to prioritize my time a little better. The Peanut and Squeaker are at the best ages right now. They WANT to be with me. They WANT to snuggle. Why would I want to do anything else? Part-time jobs will always be available when my girls are older and hanging out with their friends. Now, now is the time to soak up every minute with them and in 2014 I am going to figure out a way to do that even it means letting go of some important things in my life.

LOVE THE MOMENT

I can’t believe it is November and I can’t believe Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Where is time going?!

However, despite it being November, the weather has been absolutely gorgeous. I am talking about weekends that are in the mid to upper 70s with sunny skies. 160

Just look at that view! Beautiful! That was Auburn this past weekend. Pigeon and I agreed to meet at the Auburn Overlook and go for a 14 mile trail run. I’ve been feeling a little run down lately (Squeaker has been having some sleep issues) but I was super excited to run. I have not been out on these trails since I did She Rocks the Trails in June where I suffered miserably because of my ankle.

I brought along my camera because I wanted to dabble in some video. Poor Pigeon had no clue what the day was going to be like before she got there. Little did she know that I would turn into Director of Photography and make her run and re-run certain sections of the trail so I could capture it on video. Luckily she is an awesome sport and she even got into it herself by taking the camera and doing a little shooting herself.

Like I said, the day was beautiful and warm. I had decided to test out my hydration and fueling a bit. I knew we were running long but I only brought one 20 ounce bottle of water with me. I had salts and some dates just in case, but for the most part, I wanted to challenge my fueling as I haven’t needed to fuel on a run since my days training for the American River 50 Miler in 2010.

Pigeon had also told me we’d hit a spot where I could potentially refill my water bottle if needed. I had two  or three dates while on this 14 mile run and I really enjoyed having them. Medjool dates (without the pit) make for awesome running food. I just throw them in a baggy and pop one in whenever I feel like I need  boost.

Dates are an energy dense fruit that is mostly sugar. They can range from 60 to 100 calories per date, much like a packet of processed Gu or gels. Dates also contain some protein and amino acids but they are very low in sodium so you have to keep that in mind when using them as fuel. A lot of gels these days contain electrolytes so when you consume dates, you’ll have to plan your sodium intake accordingly.

I even shared one of my dates with Pigeon who said she kind of liked it. I really enjoyed having some natural food with me on my run and despite dates being a fiber rich food, they didn’t affect my stomach at all and I am definitely one who has a sensitive tummy when it comes to certain foods.

The run was pretty awesome. We were bounding up and down the trails and walking some of the steeper climbs. I need to work on my power walk which Pigeon has perfected. Most times I would run up the hill as much as I could and then start hiking. I’ve really been working on strength at Breakout Fitness and I can tell it is paying off when I reach the climbs.

Here we have listed a few of these: The blood needs to rush to the organ which happens due to narrowing of the arteries and this poor blood flow causes poor erection. sildenafil online canada Do not consume more than one dosage in buy women viagra 24 hours as this may create very unfavorable critical health conditions. Available in various dosages Kamagra tablets provide males lost potency of achieving firm, thicker, longer and healthy erection sufficient for satisfactory intimate moments for both partners. levitra pharmacy s contains an active ingredient known as sildenafil jelly also. Prostate Problems – Research has found that men who suffer from this condition and opt not to get treated because tadalafil 20mg generika they are worried about facing embarrassment because of it.
At one point, we came to this bench and Pigeon shared the history behind with me.

175

If you are running in Auburn and you come across this bench, you might find it odd because it truly is out in the middle of no where. There are no roads close by. No trails off to the side. Just this bench and the amazing view in front of it.

Pigeon told me that a husband and wife used to walk this trail all the time together and admire the view.  One day while Pigeon was on a run with a friend, she came across this woman staining this bench on the trail. They have no idea how she managed to get this bench to the location but there she was, by herself working on it. They stopped and I guess chatted with her a bit.

She told them about her husband and how they used to walk this trail together. Well sadly her husband passed away and she put this bench here over looking his favorite view. There is a small plague on the back of the bench that says something like “For Jonathan who loved this view. Enjoy.” I thought that was absolutely one of the sweetest stories and it touched me.

It reminded me how short life can be and how much we need to value it and be thankful for it. I started off the day by myself in the parking lot of the overlook taking photos of the sunrise just feeling thankful for the chance to run these glorious trails and ironically, I was returned to this same grateful feeling near the end of my run when we passed this bench.

Remember to find time in your day to love the moment you are in. Cherish it, be thankful for it and embrace it.

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

Back in October of 2011 I posted this on my old Trailmomma blog but I think I need to do a repost. I have been struggling all week with topics to write about lately and then one morning it dawned (no pun intended) on me as I was driving home from my workout at Breakout Fitness. It was before daylight savings and a couple was walking their dog at about 6:00 am. I know they are walking every morning because I see them but what I notice is that they wear nothing that is reflective nor do they even bring a flashlight! Yes my neighborhood is fairly quiet (especially at that time of day) however we do live on a street that is generally a passage way to those living in a nearby gated community. There is no shoulder and they can easily be struck by an oncoming car. I truly want to stop them and say please wear something reflective, not just a white shirt and bring a flash light but I am afraid they will probably freak out if I even slow my car down in the morning near them.

While government statistics don’t break down the fatality figures between runners/pedestrians and cars, Runners World did do a survey of their readers. They then posted this article back in 2010. I am sure with the large amount of smartphones and texting going on, that these numbers have probably risen more so in the last few years. In fact, a woman with whom I work out with every morning has had to battle her worst nightmare, her husband being hit by car that was going 50 mph while riding his bike. Luckily he survived but they have had to go through a series of struggles not to mention legal battles because the driver had no insurance.

I am not going to lie when I say that my heart skips a beat every time Vans goes out on a road ride. I am grateful he goes during the daytime but honestly, that doesn’t really mean much in today’s world of texting and driving.

When you add darkness to the mix, the game changes drastically and runners (as well as cyclists) need to be on the defensive. I have been running fairly consistently one night a week after work. Daylight savings has ensured that I will be running in total darkness at 6:30 pm and so I run in a variety of reflective gear and I carry two headlamps (one on my waist so that I can see and one in my hand so I can flash it at oncoming cars). I may look foolish when I leave the house but I feel safe. I also never run with headphones and I run against oncoming car traffic (never with).

Some of the items I wear are my Nathan Reflective Arm Sleeves as well as a reflective vest (I go back and forth between two brands). If I am wearing capris, Athleta’s Relay Capriss have some reflective piping on the legs for low-light conditions however I wouldn’t rely totally on that feature. I do wear one of their reflective hats as well.

A lot of people run to relieve stress and unwind, especially after work and I would say that I am one of those (especially on my week day runs) however, one thing I make sure that I always do, is stay focused and pay attention. Night running is not the time to be thinking about your day at work, what you will have for dinner or what you will make the kids for lunch tomorrow. You need to be present, in the moment and with all cylinders running. Typically I will run from my house to a local track (that has lights for the football players) and when I get to the track, I will let my mind wander but the minute I leave the track and turn on my headlamps, my brain is focused on getting me home in one piece.

There are a lot of reasons due to which an individual tends to face 100mg viagra http://icks.org/n/data/ijks/2010-0.pdf this problem. Under a national popular vote, we would see each other cialis line order again. Teens under 18 must also complete sample viagra Texas driving course. Consult a Doctor Why you should see your doctor? It is important to consult your doctor, because erectile dysfunction can be many, like hypertension, cialis professional price diabetes, cholesterol, heart disease etc.
It is often on my runs home that I see other runners, cyclists or dog walkers not wearing enough reflective gear as well as drivers looking at their phones. Please be careful and think defensively! Take the initiative and light yourself up like a Christmas tree in December and that doesn’t mean just throw on a white sweatshirt.

Watch this short youtube video :

from 3M Scotchlite’s No White At Night campaign. It will blow your mind. White is not reflective. While a great color to wear in the hot summer months, it is not ideal for night runs.

With the darkness starting to consume our evenings, please be prepared. Visit your local running store or shop online. If you have an active spouse that trains at night or in the morning, considering buying them some reflective gear and encouraging them to wear it. My kids love when I dig out my headlamps. Please share this post on Facebook or Twitter, encouraging others to run safe.

After all, it is not always about you.
